The BBC and Nintendo UK today unveil a new version of the popular BBC iPlayer on Nintendo’s Wii.
First made available through the console’s Internet Channel in April 2008, BBC iPlayer will now be available as a dedicated Wii Channel to provide Wii users with a new, richer experience of the BBC’s TV and radio on-demand catch-up service.
The new Wii Channel is expected to be available from 12.01am on Wednesday 18 November. The iPlayer channel download will be free.
Since BBC iPlayer first launched on the Nintendo Wii, there have been 900,000 requests for TV and radio programs, and this new version of BBC iPlayer for Wii has been designed to deliver a better and higher quality experience, with a new full-screen user interface allowing the whole family to catch up on TV and radio together in the lounge.
Erik Huggers, Director, BBC Future Media & Technology, said:
“We’re pleased that we’ve been able to work with Nintendo to evolve BBC iPlayer on the Wii, providing a faster, high quality and improved viewing experience.
“It’s important that we offer audiences more ways to access the huge range of BBC content available, and this improved version of BBC iPlayer underlines our commitment to reaching new audiences by making BBC iPlayer available on as many platforms as possible.”
David Yarnton, General Manager, Nintendo UK, added:
“Our partnership with the BBC is another way in which Nintendo is looking to broaden the market for its products by offering compelling and relevant content to families.
“BBC iPlayer offers Wii owners another reason to turn their console on everyday and adds to the already established non-gaming content on Wii that includes Wii Channels for news, weather forecasts and an internet browser.”

According to tetrisgrammaton on NeoGAF, the latest issue of Nintendo Power talks about Pokemon Rumble, the upcoming WiiWare game. As previously reported, the game will release on November 16th, however the game will actually cost 1500 Wii Points (like in Japan) and not 2000 Wii Points as previously thought.
The other interesting bit of news though was that a demo will be available. We know that Nintendo plans to test demos for a select few WiiWare titles, but we didn’t know if this would happen only in Japan or worldwide. Now it seems they do intend to bring WiiWare demos to the US with a Pokemon Rumble demo, however I am classifying this as a rumor because no further details were given and it could possibly be referring to demo stations as in kiosks at stores.
Oh, and Nintendo Power has an exclusive code to unlock the Pokemon Venusaur in the game, and it’s 1589-3955. I’ll try and get more details on this whole demo thing. But like I said, it’s just a rumor so don’t get excited yet.
UPDATE: Multiple sources are now reporting that it is indeed true. The latest Nintendo Power states that “a free demo of Pokemon Rumble is available for download at the Wii Shop Channel”, which means it’s true and must be coming soon. I wonder what other games, if any, will get free demos.

EEDAR analyst Jesse Divnich recently told Industry Gamers that the low sales reported by NPD in October can be attributed mainly to casual gamers. Specifically, he placed the blame on “non-traditional and casual gamers who have failed to make follow-up purchases.” Conversely, Divnich said that core game sales have been “quite healthy” throughout 2009. So, what can drive casual gamers back to the cash register? “it will take the introduction of some new style of gameplay or peripheral before we see a resurgence in the casual and non-traditional markets,” said Divnich, noting that his company expects a new DS to arrive in 2010 (presumably a next generation model, not another redesign). In addition, Divnich believes that Microsoft’s Project Natal could reinvigorate interest in motion-controlled gaming among both core and casual gamers.
Divnich also reiterated his belief that the Wii will remain on top for the rest of the year. He also thinks the PS3 could outsell the Xbox 360 over the holidays. He did note, however, that PS3 sales are “declining much faster post-price drop than the Xbx 360,” suggesting that it’s too early to claim any definite winners in the long run.

As much as we’d like to think Mario is an accredited doctor with the papers to back it up (that University of Phoenix diploma above might as well be toilet paper), the dude is just a plumber in a white lab coat. Unlike most practitioners, he’s willing to throw pills at any problem and can only really deal with two issues: the chills and fever. Nothing makes this more evident than the video made by College Humor user Brentalfloss, which adds lyrics to the Dr. Mario theme … and some kinda disturbing imagery, too. Check it out at your own risk!
[Thanks, Adrian!]

We finally understand why James Cameron spoke for nine-and-a-half hours about his upcoming film/game, Avatar, during Ubisoft’s E3 press conference earlier this year. Without the context provided during his lengthy diatribe, we’d have absolutely no idea what was going on in the above gameplay trailer for his long overdue film’s video game adaptation. However, now we understand perfectly: A blue alien guy is murdering humans with primitive weapons.
Now wait just a second. Let’s forget the fact that when one brings a knife (or in this case, a long, spiked club) to a gun fight, one rarely claims victory. Instead, let’s focus on the fact that Mr. Cameron wants us to root against humanity. “Oh, but they’re polluting their planet,” you might cry. No, they’re doing their job. That’s a thing humans have to do from time to time. They don’t have the freedom to skip around lush jungles all day, riding around on pterodactyls. They have responsibilities, and we’re not really comfortable with playing as the turquoise-toned authors of their eradication for that reason alone.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii isn’t a game for you to play by yourself. Sure, you could, but it’s just not going to be the best way to extract all of the fun the experience has to offer. Instead, you really should try to corral some friends together for multiplayer, which is guaranteed to do one of two things: strengthen the bonds you and your three partners in platforming have established, or take those friendships you’ve worked so hard on over an indeterminate amount of time and stomp them like a lost, lonely Goomba.

Today, on the European Wii Shop, Hudson follows up its surprisingly successful My Aquarium with more animals to take care of. Also on WiiWare, Nintendo’s still-weird Balance Board-equipped Rock N’ Roll Climber, whose rock-climbing/air-guitar concept, and whose non-standard apostrophe use we’ll never get used to.
The big draw for us is the arcade brawler version of Ninja Gaiden, which seems fresh to us after 20 years of dodging eagles in the NES game.

Activision may have “fewer SKUs” in 2010, but it still needs its Heroes to champion the financial cause. Guitar Hero brand CEO Dan Rosensweig tells MCV that the publisher is already working on the “next iterations” of Guitar Hero and Band Hero, and mentions that there will be “more” DJ Hero. Rosensweig makes no mention of the recently trademarked Drum Hero,
… it’s rather sad when game announcements border on non-news. Well, we might as well finish by saying that Madden NFL 11 will also release next year, along with all the other sports franchises.
